Steven A. Wolff, CMC, is the founding Principal of AMS Planning & Research Corp. and Audience Insight LLC. He works from the firm’s Connecticut headquarters. For more than 20 years, Steven has provided counsel to leading arts and entertainment enterprises in the planning and development of facilities, innovative institutional initiatives and arts market and consumer research.

Steven has participated in the development of more than $1 billion of new and renovated capital facilities for the arts across the U.S. He has provided counsel to owners and developers on a wide array of projects from the reactivation of historic theatres to adaptive re-use of found spaces as well as new construction and mixed-use developments. He has been instrumental in the planning of many of the largest arts projects in the U.S., including the Dallas Center for Performing Arts, The Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Virginia Performing Arts Complex (Richmond) and many others. Steven has guided these and other projects through all stages of development from project definition through needs assessment to site selection, financing, and project implementation and operation.

In the area of strategic planning, research and management counsel, Steven has conducted assignments in the areas of program design and evaluation, management audits, long-range strategic planning and market research for national philanthropic foundations, including Lila Wallace–Reader’s Digest, the Heinz Endowments, the Pew Charitable Trusts and the Knight Foundation. Current efforts include a multi-year benchmarking study for 24 major North American Performing Arts Centers and the development of innovative “shared services” businesses; expanding the capacity of arts producers and presenters in several markets. AMS’s research affiliate, Audience Insight LLC recently released the results of a two-year study of prospects for classical music and works with arts and entertainment enterprises nationally. His clients include performing arts centers, major symphony orchestras, commercial theatrical producers, presenters, children’s theater companies, ballet companies, museums and other arts agencies. He has also assisted national and international arts service organizations to develop new member services and prepare long-range strategic plans.

Steven is a frequent guest lecturer at major universities, including his alma mater, the Yale School of Drama, where he received a Master of Fine Arts degree in theater administration, Columbia University, New York University and the Bolz Center for Arts Administration at University of Wisconsin–Madison. Since 1996, Steven has co-taught a continuing education course in theater development for architects at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Prior to founding AMS in 1988, Steven was a manager in the New York office of London-based Theatre Projects Consultants. He is a member of the Institute of Management Consultants and holds the designation, Certified Management Consultant (CMC). Steven serves on the Board (Finance Chair) of the nationally-known Westport Country Playhouse and on the Executive Committee of the New York Yacht Club.

 


Robert H. Bailey

Robert Bailey has been involved in cultural resource planning, management and research since 1972. In his thirty years as an arts consultant, he has brought professional management and coordination to the development of scores of arts projects. Prior to establishing AMS, he operated his own arts management consulting firm in Canada and California.

Some recent planning projects that he has directed include: cultural planning and needs assessment projects for the Cities of Richmond and San Ramon in California; a cultural facilities plan inventory for the Santa Diego Redevelopment Agency; feasibility studies and project planning for the Charles M. Schulz Museum, business plans for the Miami Children’s Museum and the Art Gallery at Florida International University; and an expansion feasibility study for the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies in Banff, Alberta.

Bailey has a particular wealth of experience in the area of historic preservation and adaptive re-use of buildings for the arts. He is the author of the widely acclaimed ENCORE: Adaptive Reuse of Public Buildings for the Arts, which details historic preservation and renovation projects throughout Canada. He was a contributor to Conversion Frontiers: Military Bases and Other Opportunities for Artists (1997), and is a frequent speaker on arts facility planning at conferences and seminars nationally.

Mr. Bailey is a graduate of the MBA Program in Arts Administration at York University in Toronto. Upon graduation he worked in project management positions at the National Ballet of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario. He was Assistant Director of the York University Arts Administration program from 1974 to 1976. He continues his academic involvement at Sonoma State University where he is a regular lecturer in arts planning and management.

 


Arthur Greenberg

Arthur Greenburg

Arthur Greenberg is Director of AMS’s Midwest office in St. Louis where he is active in the full spectrum of the firm’s consulting assignments, including strategic marketing projects (for museums and performing arts institutions), feasibility studies, and cultural planning projects. Arthur brings a unique perspective to community cultural development from a diverse background in the arts, human services, and government. Since joining AMS in 1990, he has overseen the firm’s cultural planning projects in Alaska, Louisiana, Nevada, Washington, Michigan, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado, Florida, and California and served for eight years as a member of the Evaluation Team for the Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Fund Theater Program.

His recent work at AMS and Audience Insight includes directing collaborative market research projects for consortia of cultural organizations in Georgia and North Dakota; public financing studies for a group of Chicago-based museums and for the City of Fort Wayne, Indiana; market research for the Minnesota Historical Society; a strategic plan for the Alaska Native Heritage Center; and feasibility studies for a proposed African American Museum & Heritage Center in Wilmington, Delaware, for a new Community Cultural Center in Farfield, Ohio, and a new Performing Arts Center in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana.

Prior to joining AMS in 1990, Arthur served as Marketing Director for the City of Oakland’s Cultural Affairs Division. During his tenure with the City, he worked closely with the Oakland Arts Council in designing and implementing audience development programs targeting multicultural audiences. Arthur’s background in the arts includes his participation as guest curator of exhibitions at two university art museums, curatorial consultant to Levi Strauss & Company’s corporate collection of American art, and production and marketing manager with several small modern dance companies. He was the recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship and received his BA in Art History and English Literature from Washington University in St. Louis.

Christopher Caltagirone

Christopher joined the AMS Connecticut office as Research Manager in October 2003 after completing his doctoral candidacy exam at The Ohio State University. As a student in the Arts Policy and Administration program, he studied various aspects of public policy, arts education and organizational theory. He has provided research assistance to Dr. Margaret Wyszomirski for several projects related to public arts policy and intellectual property issues. During this time he was a teaching assistant for a class in Contemporary Art and Music and in his first year at OSU assumed responsibilities as graduate representative for the Association of Graduate Students in Art Education. Christopher’s dissertation research is focused on the interorganizational relationships (IORs) created between commercial producers and non-profit theatres in the professional theatre.

Before returning to school, Christopher worked for several non-profit organizations including the Girl Scouts, March of Dimes and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. As a Special Events Manager at the NMSS he was responsible for overseeing several fund-raising activities, sponsorship solicitation and volunteer development in the Southeastern Pennsylvania region. He also worked consistently with community boards and volunteers with backgrounds in various areas of business and public service.

Christopher earned his Bachelor’s degree in Theatre from Kutztown University and a Master’s degree in Theatre from Villanova University. While at Villanova he worked in the Theatre department as a graduate assistant in marketing and public relations, assisting in various activities including box office management. As a student and amateur thespian, he has performed in numerous plays and musicals. He also worked for over two years as a tour guide in Philadelphia.

Laurie Veillette

Laurie Veillette

Laurie Reich Veillette is a Research Analyst in the Connecticut office. She holds a BA in Economics from the University of Massachusetts. Laurie began her career working in forensic economics at Applied Economics, Inc. then moved into the investment strategy industry as a Researcher for H.C. Wainwright & Co., Economics, Inc. -- both located in Boston. While at Wainwright, Laurie maintained data files, generated statistical analyses and created graphics for publication. During this time she continued her academic studies at Suffolk University.

Upon her arrival in Connecticut, Laurie started Reich-Veillette Consulting, a home-based business, where she assisted the Danbury Regional Catholic School System in generating financial reports, and worked for H.C. Wainwright & Co., Economics and Intermarket Forecasting, Inc., producing graphic representations of data analyses. After four years, she closed up shop and entered the world of emergency medical services, where she became and continues to enjoy work as a volunteer EMT and Red Cross Instructor. As a member of her TownÕs Ambulance Corps., she assisted in research for introducing a full-time paramedic in-Town and authored an analysis of area EMS systems for comparative record. These reports aided in the implementation of the TownÕs current paramedic service. In 2005, Laurie joined a local credit union as a Marketing Specialist. Her responsibilities included web site design/maintenance and design/implementation of member outreach programs.

In January 2007, she completed a Master's Certificate in Business Analysis from Villanova University and in February, joined AMS Planning & Research.
